Taxonomists discovered a novel species of blind, subterranean swamp eel named Rakthamichthys anchi inside two dug-out freshwater wells located in Goalpara district, Assam. The discovery highlights the hidden aquatic biodiversity residing within subterranean aquifer ecosystems of Northeast India.

Rakthamichthys anchi is a phreatobitic species, meaning it lives exclusively within the phreatic zone of groundwater aquifers. The species possesses a completely unpigmented, translucent body; its distinct blood-red appearance arises from internal blood vessels visible through the clear skin. The specific epithet 'anchi' is derived from the indigenous Garo language word meaning 'blood'.

The genus Rakthamichthys belongs to the family Synbranchidae and is strictly endemic to India. R. anchi marks the second species under this subterranean genus discovered from North-Eastern India. True eels are elongated, scale-less, carnivorous fish characterized by continuous dorsal and anal fins, occupying diverse marine, estuarine, and freshwater habitats worldwide.

The Chhattisgarh Forest Department finalized an inter-state translocation roadmap to transfer wild water buffaloes from Assam to conservation enclosures within the Pamed Wildlife Sanctuary, Udanti Sitanadi Tiger Reserve, and Indravati Tiger Reserve to bolster the state's dwindling wild population.
