A tragic accident occurred recently when a Delhi-registered vehicle carrying 10 people fell into the Lohit River in Arunachal Pradesh, resulting in casualties and missing persons, bringing focus back to the treacherous terrain and geographical features of this northeastern river system.

The Lohit River originates in eastern Tibet in the Zayal Chu range and surges through Arunachal Pradesh before joining the Brahmaputra in Assam. Known as the 'River of Blood' due to the abundance of laterite iron-heavy soil in the Mishmi Hills, it is a fast, fierce, and unpredictable tributary with major right-bank tributaries like Dau, Dalai, and Tidding, and left-bank tributary Lang.

The river plays a pivotal role in the local economy of Arunachal Pradesh, supporting drinking water supplies, agriculture, and hydroelectric potential. Its lower reaches also hold immense cultural and religious significance due to the sacred Parshuram Kund Hindu pilgrimage site.

Raja Mircha, famously known as the Naga King Chilli, recently made headlines following a viral promotional video shared by a Nagaland minister highlighting its legendary pungency and extreme heat.

Scientifically classified as Capsicum chinense and also known as Bhut Jolokia, Raja Mircha is cultivated primarily in Nagaland. It ranks among the world's top 10 hottest chillies, recognized for its extraordinary pungency, intense fruity aroma, and unique colour transition from green to vibrant red upon maturation.

Commonly known as the Arabian skate, Dipturus dhritiae is a flat, shark-related fish living on the dark ocean floor at depths of 400 to 600 metres off the Kerala coast and Wadge Bank. It features five rows of thorn-like structures along its tail and is named in honor of Dr. Dhriti Banerjee, the first woman Director of the ZSI.

Deep-sea skates are inherently vulnerable to overfishing due to their slow reproductive rates and low fecundity. Discoveries like this highlight the urgent need for enhanced deep-sea biodiversity conservation and marine protected area management in India's exclusive economic zone.
